VICTOR HORTA - HOTEL AUBECQ
01.07.2011 – 09.10.2011
For the 150th anniversary of the birth of Victor Horta, the Brussels-Capital Region has chosen to honour an exceptional and little known heritage site: the façade of the hotel Aubecq.
An art nouveau masterpiece, in 1950 this period residence fell prey to the whirlwind of property speculation that swept through the changing city. The furniture was dispersed in private or public collections; the façade was dismantled, stored and broken up. In 1991, the Brussels-Capital Region inherited these blocks of tooled stone. A meticulous reconstruction job then ensued, worthy of a major archaeological dig.
Joining fragments together, assembling dispersed pieces, the exhibition retraces the building’s eventful history, from its construction to its recomposition, and invites the visitor to go behind the scenes of this architecture and its creator.
